Humourist David Sedaris first read his essay SantaLand Diaries on NPR's Morning Edition in 1992. It detailed his brief tenure as a Macy's Elf in gloriously misanthropic tones, complaining about everything from his demeaning velvety costume to the hordes of needy, brattish customers (and their children) he had to deal with.
Sedaris' tale has become a radio holiday tradition and is well on its way to becoming a theatrical one as well. It's been adapted into a guffaw inducing and hilariously grumpy one-man show, that also has something important to say about the rampant consumerism which is quickly swallowing up the festive season. SantaLand Diaries (which is for adults only) is just the tonic for all that holiday cheer!
